Greek groom abandons Turkish bride over ‘father’s death’
Turkish Seval Kelebik (C) and Greek Mihailis Kutsakiozis (R) decided to divorce seconds after signing their marriage papers.
A Greek man married a Turkish woman on Saturday, only to then, seconds after signing the marriage papers, declare fervently that his father had been killed by Turks and flee the scene, Turkish newspapers reported on Sunday.

The details of the incident, such as the exact timing of events, differed from newspaper to newspaper. Purportedly, 33-year-old Turk Seval Kelebik met Mihailis Kutsakiozis, 38, in the Aegean city of Ayvalık five months ago. The two quickly fell in love and decided to get married. Family members gathered in the local state marriage hall on Saturday.

Everyone cheered as the bride and the groom signed the papers in front of the witnesses, and everything was going swimmingly until the groom said he had a “surprise” for the guests; he left the room and produced pictures and candles from his pockets upon his return. He then laid the photographs and candles on the table in the hall, and said: “Turks killed my father before the war. I would like us to observe a minute of silence in his honor.” The bride subsequently ran outside in tears.

Some of the Greek guests argued with the groom, who, according to reports, took off and left for Greece “along with the jewelry given to the couple as gifts.” Reports also said the groom, as he left the wedding hall, exclaimed, “You uncultured Turks!” to the guests in the room. Speaking to journalists after her nightmarish wedding, Kelebik said: “I must have married a real nutcase. He wanted to hold a religious ritual with his father’s photo on the official wedding table. He could have at least asked for permission.”

There were conflicting reports on whether any of the groom’s family members had attended the state wedding or whether he indeed left for Greece or for the Greek island of Lesbos, where the couple had made honeymoon arrangements. Most accounts said the groom “fled” to Greece or Lesbos with the jewelry given to the couple, but it was unclear whether anybody actually tried to prevent him from leaving.

Fani Soliratis, a friend of the groom, said yesterday to a Today’s Zaman correspondent that contrary to news reports, Kutsakiozis had fled not to Lesbos, but to the city of İzmir, where he will be filing for divorce. “I think he will talk to lawyers there and he will file for both divorce and also to get back the expenses incurred for the wedding,” said Soliratis.
